How to customize your Shopify all collection

TomShopify4 Comments

A customer recently emailed me with this question about my app Best Seller Insights:

Any chance we can use Best Seller Insights to sort the ALL collection in Shopify?

As a bit of background, Best Seller Insights can sort Shopify collections based on a custom sales period. This makes your best selling products rise to the top of your collections so they should sell even better.

In this case, the Shopify all collection he is referring to is a collection that is included with every Shopify store. This collection shows all visible products within your Shopify store.

The good news is you can completely customize your Shopify all collection. This includes modifying which products show up as well as the sort order of them.

In today’s post, I’ll share the details of how you can customize the Shopify all collection within your store. This will include:

  • How does the Shopify all collection work?
  • Why you might want to customize your Shopify all collection
  • How to customize your Shopify all collection

How does the Shopify all collection work?

The Shopify all collection is included with every Shopify store out of the box. You can access this collection on any Shopify store by visiting the /collections/all link. You can see this in action over in my Flair demo store.

So what exactly is in the Shopify all collection?

The Shopify all collection includes all visible products in your store, hence the name. These products will be shown in alphabetical order based on the product title.

Shopify also refers to this collection as the catalog page. This is because the Shopify all collection is typically used to the view the entire catalog of products within a Shopify store.

Why you might want to customize your Shopify all collection

The Shopify all collection defaults may be fine for most Shopify stores. However, there may be times when you may need to customize the Shopify all collection to better fit your store’s needs.

Perhaps you want to change the sort order of the Shopify all collection?

This was the inspiration for this post. Sorting your products based on best selling is a great way to put your best products front and center so the customer is more likely to find something of interest.

Or perhaps you want to change which products are included in the all collection?

For example, you may want to exclude out of stock products, or products that are not typically bought by themselves such as Add-Ons or Upsells.

How to customize your Shopify all collection

Customizing your Shopify all collection is simple.

All you have to do is create or modify a collection and set the collection handle set to all.

As an example, here are the conditions for a Shopify collection I’ve created to replace my default all collection:

As you can see, this collection will include:

  • Products with a price greater than $0
  • Products that have available inventory.

Then, and this is the most important part, I set the collection handle to all as shown here:

This collection does not have to be a brand new collection. You can take any existing collection and change the handle to all and it will be used in place of the default Shopify all collection.

As soon as you save a collection with the handle all, it will immediately take over the duties as the Shopify all collection.

Summary

The Shopify all collection (aka – the catalog page) is included with every Shopify store.

By default, the Shopify all collection includes all visible products in the store, sorted alphabetically.

You can customize which products are included, as well as the sort order of your Shopify all collection.

This makes it easy for you to custom tailor what your customers see when visiting the catalog page within your shop.

Tom – great article! Do you know of a way to create a collection based on product creation date (i.e. “New” products)? Or do any of your apps do that? If not, do you know of any?
