Using product tags to add power-ups to your Shopify store
Growing up I used to love to watch the TV show MacGyver. There wasn't a problem he couldn't solve with a well placed paperclip or bobby pin and his trusty mullet.
Shopify comes fully loaded with a great set of tools to help you manage your e-commerce store.
But what do you do if you need to do something that is not included?
The answer? You can MacGyver in a solution by using Shopify's product tags, and the mullet is optional.
In today's post, I'd like to share with you how you can use Shopify's product tags to add power ups to your Shopify store.
The flexibility of product tags make it easy to add additional functionality above and beyond what is supported with the built-in Shopify functionality.
- Why Shopify product tags are like a virtual Swiss Army knife
- Using product tags to add features to your Shopify products
- Organizing your collections with product tags
- Using Shopify product tags for sales and discounts
Why Shopify product tags are like a virtual Swiss Army knife
Shopify's product tags can act as a virtual Swiss Army knife, or if you prefer a bobby pin or paperclip.
Why is this?
You see, Shopify made sure to treat product tags as first-class citizens throughout their ecosystem. This means you can easily use them in many different use cases throughout your store.
We can rely on product tags being available in all the places that matter such as:
- Product pages
- Sales and Discounts
Using product tags to add features to your Shopify products
You can add additional functionality to your products by using product tags.
The basic recipe goes like this:
- Add a tag to your product
- Then customize your theme to show or hide features based on the product tag
For example, if you wanted to add a little social proof to some of your products, you can add the tag
best-seller to some of your products.
Then on the product page in your theme, you can look for this tag and display a best seller badge.
Organizing your collections with product tags
You can also use product tags for managing your Shopify collections.
Why would you want to do this?
You see, using product tags to control which products end up in your collections lets you control the end-to-end experience through your Shopify store.
For example, continuing on the example above, you can create an automated Shopify collection of your best sellers based on the product tag
This will let you easily group all of these products together in one place on your shop for easy browsing.
Using Shopify product tags for sales and discounts
You can also take advantage of Shopify product tags to apply discounts to groupings of products. Discounts can not be applied based on product tags though.
So how can you make this work?
The good news is you can can make this work. We've already established you can create collections based on product tags. And you can apply discounts based on collections.
So to make a discount based on your product tag, you just need to create a collection based on the tag and then tie the discount to that collection.
For example, you could get your slow moving products selling faster by tagging them with the tag
slow-mover. Then, create a collection based on that tag. And finally apply a discount of
20% OFF to get your slow moving products to fly off of your virtual shelves.
As you can see, product tags are a great way to add power-ups to your Shopify store. You can use product tags for:
- Adding features to specific Shopify products
- Organizing your products into Shopify collections
- Applying sales and discounts to products
By using product tags, you can easily add additional functionality to your Shopify store above and beyond what Shopify provides out of the box.
