I'm Building a Shopify App

I’m building a Shopify app with the goal of launching this sometime in early 2016. I’m currently narrowing down the list of candidate app ideas (more to follow on this blog).

What are the goals for this app?

The main technical / architectural goals for this app are:

  • It should be completed in around 2 months

  • It should do (at least) one thing very well

  • It should be easy to integrate into existing Shopify stores

As far as financial goals, I don’t have a lot of insight into the financials of Shopify apps. The main motivation here is not 100% financial, but more to test the waters of the Shopify app ecosystem. That being said, I am initially setting a modest goal of low 4 figures a month for this app within the first 12 months.

What do I know about building Shopify apps?

Currently the answer is: not a lot. Coming from this with a fresh set of eyes should allow me to document things here as I discover them.

Although I have never built a public Shopify app for sale, I do have extensive Shopify API experience by building custom private Shopify apps for Shopify stores.

In addition, I have also spent the past 7 or so years running a t-shirt search engine featuring over two hundred thousand shirts (currently 230,913 to be exact). I plan on leveraging some of the insights I’ve learned along the way as part of building this Shopify app.

What comes next?

I’ll be posting about the progress of this app every week here on the blog. Posts will include details about any obstacles or challenges I run into, as well as any interesting insights I think may be useful to other Shopify app developers.
