If you are like most store owners you’ve probably been giving this a lot of thought lately.

What type of Black Friday deals should you be running to maximize your store’s sales?

How should you set up your Black Friday promotions in your Shopify store so they are more successful?

To help you make the most out of Black Friday this year, I’ve put together a 5 step guide for creating successful Black Friday promotions in Shopify.

Step 1: Plan your Black Friday sale

The first step in any successful Black Friday promotion is to plan out the details for your sale.

One common strategy is to offer a door-buster promotion in combination with a broader Black Friday sale that is available for more shoppers.

The door-buster sale is designed to bring people to your shop.

The door-buster offer should be very compelling and almost too good to be true.

Only a limited number of shoppers will be able to grab one of the door-buster items before they sell out.

Once your doors have been busted and the products have been sold, that is where your broader Black Friday sale comes into play.

For your broader Black Friday sale, you’ll typically want to offer your best discount of the year.

For example, if you typically only discount in the 10-15% range, you may want to make your Black Friday sale something like 25% off or more.

Step 2: Create collections for your Black Friday sale items

Next you’ll want to make sure your Black Friday sale items are easy to find.

On Shopify, the best way to organize your products is by using Shopify collections.

Putting all of your sale items into a collection makes it easy for your shoppers to find your Black Friday sale items all in one place.

Collections also make it easy to configure discounts within Shopify that only apply to products within a specific collection.

If you are running a site-wide sale for all items in your store, you could in theory just link to your Shopify all collection.

However, if you have any exclusions, or are only putting a subset of your products on sale, you should probably create a special Black Friday shopify collection based on your sale items.

If you have multiple types of promotions, such as door busters and 50% off items, you’ll want to make a separate collection for each such as Black Friday Door Busters and Black Friday 50% Off.

Step 3: Setup your Black Friday discounts

Now that your products are organized into Shopify collections it’s time to configure your Black Friday discounts.

For each of your Black Friday discounts, you’ll want to create a discount that applies to specific products and has a start and end time.

Here’s an example of creating a discount that applies to my Black Friday 50% Off collection and runs from Black Friday through Cyber Monday:

You’ll then need to be sure to share this code with your shoppers since they’ll need to enter it during the checkout. You can make this an exclusive deal by only sharing the code with your mailing list. Alternatively, you can just display the code in a banner on your shop.

Step 4: Create urgency on Black Friday with a countdown timer

You can boost your Black Friday sales even more by adding some urgency.

The easiest way to add some urgency to your Shopify store is with a well-placed countdown timer like the one seen here:

Urgency is a powerful motivator for shoppers as it triggers the fear of missing out (FOMO). Shoppers are more likely to buy now for fear of missing out on the limited time sale.

The countdown timer shown above is by Pixel Union, but you there are many to choose from via the Shopify app store.

Step 5: Promote your Black Friday sale items with product badges to make more sales

You can make your Black Friday promotions even more successful by using product badges.

How is this possible?

You see, product badges make it easy for customers to know which products are a part of your Black Friday sale.

If a product is on sale but the customer doesn’t know it, you may lose the sale.

You can use product badges to make sure your customers know exactly which products qualify for your Black Friday promotions.
